About The Glass

The Glass is an independent, Victorian-based news publication. We cover Melbourne and the state closely, and increasingly the nation and the world beyond it. Hard news, politics, culture, and the stories we think matter most, told with a clear eye and without the hedging.

We do things differently, and we won't pretend otherwise.

We unapologetically harness an AI system that lets a small team publish at the scale of a much larger newsroom. It means we can watch more sources, catch more of what matters, and cover stories a team our size otherwise couldn't. The technology has been built and refined continuously for more than six months — and it's still going.

But the AI doesn't run the newsroom. The judgment does.

Every story is held to the highest standard of journalistic integrity: checked against multiple sources, verified before it runs, and edited by a real news editor who holds a HarvardX Professional Certificate in Computer Science for Artificial Intelligence — so the tools are understood, not just used. Nothing is published on trust. If we can't verify it, we don't run it, or we tell you what we can and can't stand behind.

We also use tailored AI-generated stock images, and we're upfront about that too. It lets us illustrate our reporting without lifting licensed material or misrepresenting anyone. We never use an image to portray something that didn't happen, and we never pass off a generated image as a real photograph of a real event. The image supports the story; it never invents one.

What we cover: Melbourne and Victorian news, national and international affairs, and culture with a bias toward technology and the arts. We take positions. We run criticism. We cover the closures, the disputes, the funding fights and the scene politics that the city guides won't touch. We're viewpoint-led and we don't hide it.
